Hi,
I have a question about US 3G iPhone unlocks and foreign networks compatibility. I'd like to know if by unlocking the US 3G iPhone, could I use the Orange network and service while away on business trip.
And still remain AT/T customer but with number suspended for travel reasons.... ?
Please answer me directlty through my email....Thanks for your help.

I'm sure glad I was right here, since I lost on the other prediction I had S$ in. If I had lost this one, I would have been starting over from scratch. This was a really fun one to watch unfold, I just wish I had waited til it was above 80% to place my large Against bet. Talk about cleaning up! Maybe next time. =)

@Bradley, I like the team idea. I recommend a team of 3 (in order to be able to get a majority vote). I can see several variations ...
1) Each team member contribute personal S$ from his/her networth to fund the team.
2) Each team gets seed funding from TIS
3) If we want to get fancy, we can use the money management model where non-team members can contribute into a specific team fund (managed by 3 team members) at set NAV value. The team gets a cut for winnings (as management fee).
Each voting team members get to vote on which prediction to bet on and which way and when to cash out.
Maybe it sounds too complicated .... oh well.. just a thought.

@Eric - thanks for the background. The responsiveness of the (mods? You aren't, exactly, but I lack a better term.) is one of the things I like about this place. I'd actually forgotten about the prizes after I determined they'd be too difficult/risky for me to earn (but, boy I wanted a Kindle).

That said, I am glad you have sniffers in place. It doesn't seem like it would take much for someone to make a bad bet one month (say, net worth down to -25K), then "coincidentally" have a high net worth individual follow each and every one of his bets the next month with a large bet and wait for the guy to cash out. With a good run our putative cheater could double down every couple of days (assuming his total net worth remained a fraction of the high net worth individual's) and the high net worth individual could ride the predictions out to judgment without personal loss.

@Daniel: Actually what I was supporting was public, open communications, NOT private messaging, which is what David was mentioning Eric previously mentioning as a possibility.

I don't think that private messaging would be used for manipulation. But I also don't think it would be great for the site. Free flow of ideas, especially when people are seeking clarification or spreading news that helps people find breaking information that will change the odds, can more easily be accomplished when everyone can read/post. Besides, it's better for community building when the entire community can participate.

I think a "team" idea could be interesting. Not sure how it would function in practice.

This is why we need a discussion forum. :) We could float ideas, discuss, and come to a community concensus on what we want and what would improve the site.

@Daniel, running a Cabal is one thing. But keep in mind, to win (if that's what you're interested in) all you need to do is have the best % gain each month. That's how it currently works. Take a look at Lev, on the prize page. His networth was relatively low (no offense, Lev) but because he nearly doubled it in one month, he won in June. The larger your pool grows, the more you have to spend.

We are looking at several different approaches to this interesting dynamic with the game.

And, to the underlying message in your comment, we also have security measures in place that "sniff out" unsportsmanlike behaviors.

We have received a LOT of requests for personal communications between connections. However, I could see a direction in which connections may be used for building "teams" but all communications are publicly accessible. In the end, we'll probably build what the community really desires the most.

I think it would be more interesting/useful if those messages were more generally-accessible.

A private messaging system isn't likely to get nearly as much use as a board where multiple people can interact.

We could always ask TIS to provide both and then run a prediction on which gets more use. :)

Judgment on July 18, 2008:

After watching this exciting horse race go back and forth for several days, we have finally crossed the finish line. And, the winner is: the Industry Standard community. You correctly predicted (nice going, Kevin Railsback!) that this would indeed not occur in the allotted timeframe within the specific rules that were given. Most importantly in the judgment, no carrier other than AT&T has been verified on a 3G iPhone when the prediction closed. Judged at S$0. – The Industry Standard

Original prediction:

The first iPhone firmware needed over two months to be jailbroken, the second and third were done in a matter of days, and later versions within a few weeks.

This time hackers are getting a head start with the iPhone 2.0 beta firmware released along with the SDK.

While the need to jailbreak an iPhone may be lessened by the appearance of the App Store, there still will be plenty of programs that will not want to follow Apple’s rules to qualify for the store. Also, of course, demand for using the iPhone on other networks will only increase with a new, cheaper iPhone.

  In order for this bet to be judged favorably, the iPhone 2.0 firmware must be fully jailbroken. That is, a jailbroken 3G iPhone should be able to have non-Apple approved applications and use other carriers besides AT&T. It must happen within one week, from the July 11th store availability through July 18th.

Judgement will occur after the week has expired, or earlier if the event occurs and is confirmed in the main stream media.
