Judgment on July  15, 2008:  No new DS models were announced at E8 this year during the Nintendo keynote.  If it isn't announced there, it isn't going to happen.  The community was right; judged at S$0.  -- The Industry Standard

Original prediction:  It's been 2 years since Nintendo released the DS Lite and 4 years since the original DS handheld console.

Will Nintendo announce a successor DS at E3 (July 11-13th in Los Angeles)?

This prediction will be set to close a week before the convention. It will be judged at the earliest when Nintendo announces a new version of the DS handheld gaming console or after the end of E3.

I would be very surprised if Nintendo does not integrate the Wii-mote like control onto the DS. We have seen the iPhone demonstrated with Super Monkey Ball with the device as the controller. The question is will this be incorporated in the next DS version (to take it to the next level) and to keep competition from PSP at bay (despite how slight)..

Just found this... a third party gear to make current DS and DS Lite motion-sensing capable. Check it out at http://ndsmotion.com/

Nintendo to announce something at E3 (http://blogs.pcworld.com/gameon/archives/006798.html). Take it for what it woth.

@David, if I'm reading your post about the motion-sensing pack correctly, that could literally turn your DS into a Wiimote. How bizarre (and interesting)!

Have you also heard that MS is rumored to be launching avatars (Miis) at E3? We'll have a prediction about that soon. If you guys hear of any other E3 rumors that aren't specifically about games launching, be sure to let us know! (Although, an interesting exception is the rumor I read today about MS/XBox launching a social networking game something or other. . . )

@Eric, the motion-sensing pack essentially makes the entire DS into a device that can play games like Super Monkey Ball using the DS itself (sans the control buttons).

I am aware of the rumored Xbox Avatars at E3. I have posted a suggestion for prediction of the 60GB Xbox 360 and price cuts on 20GB announcement at E3. I will feed the suggestion mill with additional rumors as I come across them.

@Eric, the Super Monkey Ball comment was meant to allude to the demonstration at Apple WWDC where it shows the iPhone being used as the controller. Given that it was Nintendo that brought this new method of game play with the Wii, I dont see why the technology cannot be implemented into the new DS thus addressing competition from PSP and iPhone.

Yes, a colleague of mine has some games on his iPhone (e.g. a car racing game) where you simply tilt the iPhone in the direction you want the car to turn. It's pretty remarkable and dummy proof.

Wow! What a swing with NO news!!!!!

E3 no longer holds the prestige as it once did in years past. Several significant game developer will be noticeably absent from E3 2008. As for Nintendo, it looks like it will focus more on games rather than hardware at E3. Similarly for Wii . Another related game focus announcement is here.

This article which points to DS Lites to continue (albeit with shiny colors) at least through August 31 (which is post E3 date).
